The first Cursillos developed in the Roman Catholic Church in Majorca, Spain in the late 1940's. Cursillo was brought to the United States by Spanish airmen who were training with the United States Air Force. The first one took place in 1957 in Waco, Texas. They were initially held only in the Spanish language and were limited to Roman Catholics. The first English language weekend occurred in 1961 in San Angelo, Texas. In 1970, the first official Three-Day Weekend in the Episcopal Church was conducted with help from Roman Catholic sponsors in the Diocese of Iowa. The movement grew quickly and they were soon being held in every part of the country. The Diocese of Central Florida held its first Cursillo in the mid 1970's.
